ADDITIONAL 6TH FORM CLASSROOMS, LAB & SPORTS FACILITIES
Campion College has the most successful 6th Form programme in Jamaica. It has produced more Jamaica Scholars and Rhodes Scholars than any other secondary institution in the country. Its graduates have consistently won scholarships to the most prestigious North American universities.
The science and technology programme is particularly strong, staffed by some of the most talented and experienced teachers in the region. Their students consistently dominate the National Merit Lists generated by the Caribbean Examinations Council at the end of each examination cycle. As an example, in 2019, all 10 top places in CAPE Biology Unit 2 went to Campion College students, and in Physics Unit 1, 8 of the top 10 places went to Campionites. Most notably, in 2018, only three students from the Caribbean region were accepted to MIT and 2 of those were graduates of the Campion College 6th Form. This year we will send 6A graduates not only to MIT but also to at least five Ivy League Universities, a testimony to the consistently high quality of science education in our 6th Form.
Understandably, there is great pressure on this programme to accept more than the 60 students it can currently accommodate. The result is that Campion College students with strong qualifications are sometimes unable to gain admittance to 6th form. In instances when the school has stretched its intake numbers to 70, in response to the pressing demand for spaces, the existing science laboratories prove wholly inadequate. Classes are cramped and teachers must compete for lab time, frequently forced to hurriedly wrap up their practical classes to make way for the next group of students waiting to use the lab. None of this makes for good teaching and learning and in fact could pose a threat to the safety of our staff and students.
Our urgent need is to expand our science programme by creating 2 new classrooms and a second science lab on the 6th form block. This would allow us to comfortably admit an additional 30 students to the programme and ease the pressure on the existing facilities.
The estimated cost of construction is US$500,000.00.
The sports programmes at Campion College have expanded significantly over the last decade, to the extent that today, there are 28 coaches, monitoring 15 sports directly serving over 940 students. Though the programmes have expanded, the sporting infrastructure have not grown at the same pace.
Our objectives for sports:
1. To raise funds to assist the improvement of the sports facilities
• Deepdene perimeter fence
• Add bench area to Deepdene playfield
• Resurface basketball court
• Add utility rooms to pool house
• Install an irrigation system on the cricket field (Wilbert Parkes Oval)
2. Design and install a Campion Sports Wall of Fame
3. Construct temporary accommodation for athletes and sports officials
4. Construct storage facilities on one playfield (BBQ field)
